Summer is coming to a close; school is back in session; it’s basically, almost, kind of Halloween; and we’re (I’m) back with a brand new season of The Spittoon!
First of all, a formal welcome to the new subscribers (yes you). Thank you for sharing your precious email inbox space with me. My goal is to never share anything with you that I wouldn’t want to spend the time reading myself, so I hope you’ve at least made it to this sentence.
Second, you may be asking yourself, what’s going to happen in this “new season?” Well my instinct is not to spoil that tension1, but I can at least share some things to expect:
Works of Non-Fiction - Long-form articles exploring different facets of drug addiction through my biased, personal lens. Here’s a good one2:
Works of Fiction - Original stories, written by your’s truly. These include both short-stories and my serialized novel Still Life of Desert Animals. If you haven’t been reading it’s never too late to catch up!
Works of Others - Posts aimed to highlight others in the community. Stories and writers that I find inspirational—that make me think. Something like this:
Bring your friends. I’ll see you all next week!
Okay, I may just be making this up as I go along.
I’ve unilaterally decided it’s time to start celebrating Halloween.
I look forward to reading all of it. ;)
Thank you so much for the shoutout, Matt! I was actually just here to read your post, so what a fun surprise!
I've always written nonfiction but am contemplating experimenting with fiction centring addiction and recovery (amongst other things). Do you have any examples of that (whether your own writing or that of others)? I'm seeking craft inspiration, and you weave so artfully between fiction and non!
